How Medicare applies to integrative GP consultations

Claiming your Medicare rebate

You can claim your Medicare rebate in several ways:

If processed electronically at the time of payment, the rebate is typically deposited into your nominated bank account within a few business days.

What Medicare may not cover

While the GP consultation itself attracts a Medicare rebate, some services associated with integrative and functional medicine care are not covered by Medicare. These can include:

• Advanced or functional pathology testing such as microbiome analysis, specialised hormonal panels, or food sensitivity testing
• Complementary therapy consultations
• Nutraceutical protocols and supplements

It is worth clarifying at your first appointment which components of your care plan attract a Medicare rebate and which carry an additional cost.

Chronic Disease Management Plans

If you are managing a chronic or complex condition, you may be eligible for a GP Management Plan (Medicare Item 721) and Team Care Arrangement (Item 723). These allow GP referrals to eligible allied health providers, with Medicare covering up to five allied health visits per calendar year. Private health insurance
